How to Prepare an Exotic Car for Long-Term Storage: The Complete Checklist

Long-term car storage is not the same as parking for a long weekend — putting a collector car away for a season takes preparation. Left unprepared for three months or more, gasoline oxidizes, acids accumulate in old engine oil, tires develop flat spots, batteries discharge, and rodents move in. The good news: proper layup is a half-day job with a short shopping list. Here is the complete checklist, in the order you should work through it.

Step 1: Wash, Detail, and Protect the Paint

Never store a dirty car. Bird droppings, bug splatter, brake dust, and road film are mildly acidic or abrasive, and months of contact will etch clear coat and pit brightwork. Before layup:

  1. Wash and fully dry the car, including door jambs, sills, and wheel barrels. Trapped moisture under trim is how corrosion starts.

Used engine oil holds combustion byproducts — moisture, unburned fuel, and acidic compounds — that slowly attack bearings and seals while the car sits. A good rule of thumb: change the oil and filter within a couple of weeks of layup, then run the engine to operating temperature once so fresh oil coats internal surfaces.
