Short answer: Orlando car storage for a collector car starts with a fully enclosed building that controls humidity, not just temperature. Central Florida's summer rain, heat and sun are the main threats. Being inland lowers the storm-surge risk, but it does not remove the risk of heavy rain and flooding. Ask every facility for its humidity logs, its flood-zone designation and what its backup power covers. If you are a snowbird, also ask exactly what a seasonal package includes.
Most people know Orlando for its theme parks. Our Orlando city page describes a collector market that goes well beyond them. It points to the technology corridor running from Lake Nona through Maitland to Sanford, and to Winter Park's long-established wealth. The collectors it describes include tech executives, real estate developers, medical professionals and remote workers who moved from California and New York and brought their cars with them.
This guide covers what Central Florida's climate does to a stored car, what to require from a facility, where to store in the metro and how to compare quotes. (Airport parking for a trip is a different service. This guide is about storing a collector car for months at a time.)
The climate problem: rain, heat and sun
The Orlando page describes summer thunderstorms that bring heavy afternoon rain nearly every day from June through September, along with high humidity and summer heat. Together they make climate control a requirement, not an upgrade.
The page lists what moisture does to an unprotected car: interior mold, corroded brake rotors, condensation in the fuel system and oxidized electrical connectors. It warns that this can happen within a single summer storage season. A closed home garage does not stop it. Neither does a self-storage unit with no climate control. Both trap humid air around the car.
Air conditioning alone is not the answer either. A building that is cooled but does not hold a set humidity level can still be damp. Our comparison of climate-controlled vs. standard indoor storage explains the difference. Our guide to the best humidity for classic car storage explains why most collectors aim for about 45–55% relative humidity.
Sun is the other issue. The page notes that Florida sun fades paint, cracks leather and breaks down rubber on any car left outdoors for long periods. That rules out covered outdoor parking for anything you care about, even with a good cover.
Inland doesn't mean storm-proof
Orlando sits well inland, so it does not face the storm surge that coastal Tampa Bay or Miami do. For some owners, that is a reason to store here. But hurricanes still reach Central Florida. Hurricane Ian in 2022 caused widespread flooding in parts of the region, and Hurricane Milton crossed the state south of Orlando in 2024. Inland, the main risks are heavy rain, flooding near lakes and rivers, and long power outages.
Flood zone and floor elevation
Central Florida has many lakes, rivers and low areas. Ask for the building's FEMA flood-zone designation and its finished-floor elevation, and ask whether the site took on water in 2022 or 2024. A specific answer is worth more than a general promise.
Backup power
Humidity damage starts when the climate system stops. Ask what the generator powers (the climate system, the security system, the doors or only the lights) and how long it can run on the fuel kept on site.
Lightning and power surges
Central Florida's summer storms bring frequent lightning. Ask whether the climate and security systems have surge protection, and whether battery tenders are plugged into protected circuits.
Our Tampa Bay storage guide covers wind ratings and written storm plans in more detail. Most of it applies in Orlando too.
What to require from an Orlando facility
| Requirement | Why it matters in Orlando | How to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fully enclosed, climate-controlled building | Summer heat and daily storms | Ask for summer temperature logs |
| Humidity held in a set range | Mold, corrosion and fuel condensation | Ask for humidity logs, not just a thermostat setting |
| No outdoor or covered-only parking | Sun damage to paint, leather and rubber | See where your car would actually sit |
| Flood zone and floor elevation | Heavy rain and flooding inland | Ask for the designation and the 2022/2024 history |
| Generator for climate and security | Long outages after storms | Ask what it powers and how long it runs |
| Surge protection | Frequent summer lightning | Ask how chargers and systems are protected |
Snowbirds: storing in Orlando for the summer
Many Central Florida collectors leave for the summer, which is exactly when the climate is hardest on a stored car. The Orlando page's FAQ says seasonal packages for snowbirds typically include battery maintenance, tire pressure monitoring and a pre-pickup inspection when you return in the fall.
Before you sign, ask for those services in writing, with how often each one happens. Ask how the facility will contact you if something is wrong while you are away, and how much notice it needs to have the car ready when you come back. Our guide to storing a car for 6 months covers what fails over a long summer. If the car travels north with you, our guide to coordinating enclosed transport and storage covers the handoffs.
Where to store in the Orlando area
The Orlando page's FAQ says the best-equipped exotic car storage in the area is currently in Apopka, on the northwest side, and Sanford, on the northeast side. It notes that Winter Park, Maitland and Lake Nona, where many collectors live, are within easy reach of both. The page's quote form groups the metro into Orlando in general, Apopka and Winter Garden, Sanford and Lake Mary, Maitland and Winter Park, South Orlando and Kissimmee, and Lake Nona.
Choose by how you use the car:
- If you drive it most weekends, pick the side of town closest to home. I-4 runs through the tourist corridor, and that traffic adds time to every trip.
- If it mostly sits, a longer drive is a fair trade for better climate control or higher ground.
- If you are comparing beyond the metro, the Orlando page suggests Tampa, roughly 85 miles west, Sarasota, about 130 miles southwest, and Jacksonville to the north.
Events: why Orlando collectors move their cars
Our Orlando car events page lists the monthly Orlando Cars and Coffee on the second Sunday and the Hagerty Cars and Coffee at Ace Cafe Orlando on the third Saturday. It also lists Festivals of Speed Orlando each May and Mecum Kissimmee each January at Osceola Heritage Park, which Mecum bills as the world's largest collector car auction. Confirm dates with the organizers before you go.
If your car goes out often, ask how much notice the facility needs to release it and whether it will check tire pressures and the battery first. If you are selling at Kissimmee, our guide to preparing a car for auction from storage covers the timeline.
What storage costs in Orlando
Our storage cost data reference places Orlando in its value tier, alongside Tampa, Sarasota and Jacksonville. That makes it less expensive than Miami or Palm Beach. The same factors move quotes here as everywhere. True humidity control adds cost over a building that only has air conditioning. Private or semi-private bays usually add 25–50% over a shared floor. Battery and tire services run $50–$150 a month when they are not bundled. Annual terms often earn 5–15% off month-to-month rates. For snowbirds, ask whether a seasonal package costs less than paying month to month. The cost calculator can help once you have quotes.
How to compare Orlando quotes
- Use one specification for every quote: the same bay type, services and term.
- Put the climate and storm answers side by side: humidity logs, flood zone, floor elevation and generator coverage.
- Get the full monthly total, including battery service, inspections and any seasonal fees.
- Read the contract before signing. Our list of car storage contract clauses covers access, notice and liability terms.
- Check the facility against a standard. Our verification standards list what we look for in climate control, security and fire protection.
