The one-line answer: if you can give the car a real 20–30 minute drive, every two to four weeks is the right interval. If all you can do is start it and let it idle in the garage, do nothing instead — that is not a compromise, it is the better option.
This is the most common question owners ask about a car that is going to sit, and it is usually asked the wrong way round. "How often should I start it?" assumes starting is the maintenance. It isn't. Almost everything that protects a stored engine happens in the last fifteen minutes of a drive, not the first thirty seconds of a start, and a monthly idle-start delivers the costs of running the engine while skipping the benefits.
Here is what actually happens in each scenario, how long a genuine exercise drive needs to be, and what to ask a facility whose service list says "monthly starts."
Why a monthly idle-start does more harm than good
Combustion makes water, and only heat removes it
Burning gasoline produces carbon dioxide and water — roughly a gallon of water, as vapor, for every gallon of fuel burned. Most of it leaves through the tailpipe, but some condenses on cool metal: inside the exhaust system, and inside the crankcase, where it mixes with the oil. A fully warmed engine drives that moisture back off, because the oil gets above the boiling point of water and the exhaust gets hot enough to dry itself out. A ten-minute idle does neither. It manufactures a fresh batch of water, deposits it in the oil and the muffler, and shuts down before any of it can leave. Repeat that monthly and you have built a small, reliable corrosion program for your own car.
Oil temperature lags coolant temperature badly
The temperature gauge on the dash almost always reads coolant, and coolant comes up fast — often within five to ten minutes. Oil is much slower, typically needing fifteen to twenty-five minutes of actual driving, and longer in cold weather or in a car with a large sump and an oil cooler. So the gauge showing "normal" is not the signal you need. It is entirely possible to idle a car until the needle sits in the middle and still have oil that never got close to shedding its moisture and fuel.
Cold starts are where the wear is
A large share of an engine's total mechanical wear happens in the first minutes after a cold start, before oil pressure and film thickness are fully established and while clearances are still wrong. During that warm-up the mixture is deliberately rich, and some of that extra fuel washes down the cylinder walls past the rings and into the sump, thinning the oil and reducing its ability to carry load. Drive the car and the fuel evaporates back out as the oil heats. Shut it off after ten minutes and it stays. Twelve idle-starts a year is twelve cold starts and twelve doses of fuel dilution, in exchange for nothing.
Idling barely charges the battery
This is the belief that keeps the practice alive, and it is the weakest part of it. An alternator produces far less than its rated output at idle speed, and a modern car at idle is already consuming a good share of that — fuel pump, ignition, cooling fans, dozens of control modules, plus the blower and lights if you have them on. What is left to actually replace the charge the starter just took is small, and it is being asked to refill a battery that has also been self-discharging and feeding parasitic draw for a month. "Should I start it in the winter?" — especially not then
Cold is the worst case for every mechanism above. The engine takes far longer to reach temperature, so the odds of a short run getting the oil hot are close to zero; more fuel is injected during warm-up; and the condensation you create has more cold surface to settle on. An unheated garage in January is precisely where a "keep it healthy" monthly start does the most damage.
What a real exercise drive does
If you can drive the car, the list of things that only a drive accomplishes is long:
- Boils moisture and fuel out of the oil — the whole point, and it needs sustained oil temperature, not a warm needle.
- Coats internals in fresh oil — cams, cylinder walls, and bearing surfaces under real load rather than at idle.
- Works every seal and gasket — rubber that flexes and stays wetted with fluid lasts longer than rubber that sits.
- Cycles the air conditioning — running the compressor circulates refrigerant oil past its shaft seal, which is what stops the system leaking down over a long layup.
- Cleans the brakes — a few firm stops wipe the film of surface rust off the rotors before it can pit them.
- Puts the tires back round — twenty to thirty minutes of heat and flex resolves an ordinary flat spot.
- Exercises the drivetrain — work an automatic through all its gears, or a manual through the clutch and every ratio, so the fluids reach the parts that need them.
- Circulates treated fuel — and reaches the catalytic converter's light-off temperature of roughly 500°F, which a garage idle never does.
Two rules make the drive count. Warm it up gently — no high revs, no hard loads until oil temperature is genuinely up — and never put it away wet or salty. A drive that ends with brine on the underside and moisture in the interior costs more than it bought. If the roads are treated, that is the month to skip.

The case for doing nothing
Leaving a car alone for six months sounds like neglect, but a properly prepared car in a temperature-stable building is genuinely more durable dormant than it is under a monthly idle regime. "Properly prepared" is doing real work in that sentence: fresh oil, so the acids and moisture in used oil are not sitting against bearings; a full tank of stabilized fuel; a multi-stage battery maintainer; correct tire pressures or cradles; a breathable cover; and no parking brake left engaged. Environment is the other half. Stable temperature and humidity remove most of the reasons anyone wanted to run the engine in the first place — a building that holds 45–55% relative humidity is not producing the condensation that a monthly start is supposedly chasing away. It is also why the same car needs a different plan in different markets: a collection sitting through summer in Scottsdale is fighting heat and fuel degradation, while one in Miami is fighting humidity, and neither is fighting what a car in a controlled building faces.
If a facility offers "exercise drives," ask these five questions
Concierge and premium tiers often list startups or exercise drives, and the phrase covers everything from a genuine road route to someone turning the key in the bay. It is worth pinning down:
- Start or drive? If it is a start, ask them not to bother, or ask what it is for. If it is a drive, ask the route length and typical duration — you want to hear twenty minutes and up, not "around the lot."
- Who drives, and is it logged? Named staff, a mileage log, and a written record of each outing should be standard.

- Does it conflict with your own policy? If you took a lay-up or storage rate, parts of your coverage may be suspended, and collector policies frequently carry annual mileage limits. Exercise miles count. Clear it with your agent before anyone drives the car.
- What happens in bad weather? A program that drives the car through road salt because it is the scheduled week is worse than no program.
