How to Store a Car for the Winter: A Collector's Checklist

Winter is the busiest season in collector car storage. The instinct is to worry about the cold. Cold on its own is not what hurts a stored car — a properly prepared vehicle will sit through a –10°F January without complaint. The damage comes from everything that travels with winter: road brine left on the chassis, water sitting somewhere it can freeze, condensation from a building that warms every afternoon and drops below the dew point every night, and a battery that quietly discharges until it can freeze solid.

1. Time the last drive before the salt trucks run

The most expensive winter storage mistake usually happens before the car ever reaches the bay. Owners wait for the first genuinely cold week, drive in on treated roads, and then park a brine-coated chassis for four months.

Road crews apply liquid de-icer ahead of a forecast storm, not after it, so the first salt of the season often lands on dry pavement well before the first snow you actually see. Put the car away before that starts — including in mild markets, since a Charlotte or Nashville winter still brings a few ice events a year and the brine trucks that precede them.

If the final drive did touch treated pavement, do not simply park it:

  • Wash the car including the undercarriage, wheel wells, and inner barrels. Modern magnesium- and calcium-chloride de-icers are hygroscopic — they pull moisture out of the air and stay actively corrosive long after the roads look dry. A top-down rinse does not reach the places that matter.
  • Drive it afterward long enough to get the brakes and exhaust fully dry.

2. Freeze-proof the fluids

This is the one category of storage failure unique to winter, and the one that turns a storage bill into an engine bill.

  • Coolant. Verify concentration with a refractometer or test strips rather than trusting the last shop visit. A proper 50/50 mix protects to roughly –34°F and carries the corrosion inhibitors the system needs. A diluted mix in an unheated building risks a cracked radiator, pushed freeze plugs, or a split block — and you find out in spring.
  • Washer fluid. Summer blend and plain water both freeze, and a frozen reservoir cracks along with the pump. Run winter-rated fluid through until it sprays clear, or drain the system.
  • Anything else holding water. Clear the sunroof and cowl drains, and check for standing water in the spare well or under the mats. Ice expands wherever it forms.

3. Keep the battery charged, not merely connected

Cold and discharge compound each other. A fully charged lead-acid battery resists freezing to far below 0°F, but a deeply discharged one can freeze at temperatures around 20°F — and a frozen battery is scrap, sometimes with a split case and electrolyte on the floor.

Use a smart maintainer in the 1–2 amp class rather than an old continuous trickle charger, and confirm two things owners routinely skip:

  • It is set to the correct chemistry. AGM and lithium starter batteries need the right profile, and most lithium chemistries should not be charged below freezing at all — many automotive units include a low-temperature cutoff, but check the manufacturer's guidance before leaving one on charge in an unheated space.
  • The outlet stays live. A GFCI that nuisance-trips in a damp building leaves the maintainer dark for months.

4. Tires and cold concrete

Tire pressure falls roughly 1 psi for every 10°F drop in ambient temperature, so a car set to storage pressure in a warm shop can be meaningfully underinflated once the building settles to winter temperatures. Set pressures after the car has cooled to the temperature it will sit at, then re-check at the first monthly visit.

Flat spotting is also worse in the cold, because cold rubber is stiffer and takes a set more readily. For four or five months on low-profile summer tires, cradles that spread the contact patch over a wider arc beat pressure alone. If you are adding pressure instead, Hagerty's guidance is a modest bump of 2–5 psi over the placard figure — tire makers such as Michelin consider placard pressure adequate — and never past the sidewall maximum.

One winter-specific detail: an unsealed slab-on-grade floor wicks ground moisture upward all season. A vapor barrier under the car, or simply a sealed floor, keeps that away from the underside.

5. Leave the parking brake off

Months of damp cold can bind pads or shoes to the rotor or drum. Chock the wheels and leave the car in gear or in Park instead. The caveat for modern cars: some electronic parking brakes apply automatically at shutdown, and a seized one may need a service tool to release — check the owner's manual for a storage or transport procedure first.

6. Button up the interior

  • Convertible tops go up, dry. A folded top creases along the same lines all winter and traps whatever moisture was in the fabric.
  • Skip the cracked window unless the building is genuinely humidity-controlled. The old advice about leaving a window ajar for airflow is an invitation to rodents; a desiccant pack in the cabin does the same job without the risk.
  • Pull damp mats and vacuum every crumb. Autumn is exactly when mice start hunting for a warm place to winter, so the exclusion steps — blocked intake and exhaust, snap traps rather than poison bait, no food or cardboard in the space — matter more in November than any other month.

Heated, unheated, or actually climate-controlled?

"Heated" and "climate-controlled" get used interchangeably in storage listings. They are not the same product.

Stability first, warmth second. Corrosion risk tracks relative humidity far more closely than it tracks the thermometer, so a cold building holding a steady low humidity treats a car better than a warm one that cycles. In a dry-winter market like Denver, a sealed and well-drained unheated building performs better than the same building would in a humid climate — though Denver's wide day-to-night swing is exactly the condensation driver to ask about.

Questions to ask before you hand over the keys

  1. What temperature and humidity ranges do you hold, and who checks them?
  2. What happens in a multi-day outage — is there generator backup for climate control?
  3. Is the approach road salted, and do you ask owners to arrive washed?
  4. Are battery maintainers provided and inspected on a schedule, or do I supply my own?
  5. Can I get the car out in January, and how much notice do you need after a snowfall?
  6. Will you send a current garagekeepers insurance certificate?
  7. What is in a winter care plan — tire repositioning, exercise starts, a spring pre-delivery check?

Ten minutes of paperwork

Call your agent about a winter lay-up arrangement — some insurers offer a storage-period endorsement that reduces the on-road portions of a collector policy while keeping comprehensive in force. Do not simply drop coverage: comprehensive is what responds to fire, theft, and water damage while the car sits. Then book the space early. Owners who leave for the season often need storage at both ends — a bay at home for the car that stays and, in winter destinations like Scottsdale, space for the one that travels with them.
