Classic cars rarely die from being driven. They deteriorate from sitting — quietly, in a way that only becomes obvious when you turn the key in April and something that worked in October no longer does: seized brakes, a fuel system full of varnish, a battery that will not hold a charge, corrosion blooming where you cannot see it.
None of that is mysterious, and almost none of it requires expensive equipment to prevent. Storing a classic car well comes down to controlling four variables and choosing the right space. Everything else — covers, chargers, mothballs, forums arguing about oil — is detail hanging off those five decisions.
The four things that damage a car that isn't moving
Every storage practice worth following traces back to one of these:
- Moisture. Water vapor corrodes brake rotors, wiring connectors, exhaust internals, and unprotected steel, and grows mold on leather and carpet. It is the biggest factor, and it is invisible.
- Stale fuel. Gasoline oxidizes and separates. In a vented tank or a carburetor float bowl it also evaporates, leaving gum and varnish in exactly the passages you least want blocked.
- A discharging battery. Lead-acid batteries self-discharge even when disconnected, and sulfate when left sitting in a discharged state. Weeks of neglect can cost you the battery; months can cost you two.
- Static load. The same patch of tire carrying the same weight for months develops flat spots, and bushings, seals, and hoses take a set. Older rubber compounds are less forgiving than modern ones.
Rodents deserve honorable mention as a fifth: storage gives them months of undisturbed access to wiring insulation, sound deadening, and seat foam.
Where the car sleeps decides most of the outcome
This is the fundamental most people skip past, and it matters more than any product you can buy. The options, roughly in order of how well they work:
A home garage
Good, and better than its reputation, provided it is dry and reasonably stable in temperature. The two upgrades that pay for themselves are a hygrometer (so you know what the air is actually doing) and, if the reading runs high, a small dehumidifier with a drain line. A vapor barrier sheet or interlocking floor tiles under the car is common practice in slab-on-grade garages, where the concrete itself can push moisture upward. What a home garage usually lacks is security, fire suppression, and an insurer that expects a valuable car to be there.
No garage
Renting space is the honest answer, and the choices are wider than most owners think: a drive-up self-storage unit, a bay in a private shop, a shared warehouse, a car condo, or a dedicated collector facility. The pitfall is assuming a unit is climate-controlled because the sign says so — many are temperature-managed only, with no humidity control at all. Outside, as a last resort
Sometimes there is no indoor option for a while. If so: park on pavement rather than grass or dirt, which continuously evaporate moisture into the underside of the car, and stay out from under trees, which deliver sap, bird droppings, and the occasional branch. Use a cover rated for outdoor use with a soft inner layer, fitted snugly enough not to flog the paint in wind, and never on a dirty car — a cover moving against grit is an abrasive. UV and thermal cycling will still age paint, rubber, and interior plastics faster than any garage would, which is why outdoor storage is a stopgap rather than a plan.
A collector facility
What you are buying is the moisture problem solved by someone else, plus security, monitoring, and often battery tending and tire checks folded into the rate. Whether that is worth the monthly cost depends on the car and how long it sits.
Rust is a humidity problem, not a rain problem
A car under a roof can rust enthusiastically. Steel corrosion needs moisture, and its pace tracks relative humidity: slow in genuinely dry air, faster once RH passes roughly 60%, and sharply faster in the 75–80% range and above. That is why collector facilities target something like 45–55% RH rather than simply keeping the building warm — and why a heated but unconditioned garage in a humid climate can be worse than an unheated one, since every warm-up cycle condenses water onto cold metal.
Climate shapes this. In the humid Southeast — think Raleigh and the Carolinas — dehumidification is the whole game, and an uncontrolled space will spend months above the threshold where corrosion accelerates. In dry markets like Las Vegas the metal is comparatively safe, but heat and UV move to the top of the list: rubber, hoses, dashboards, and paint pay the price instead. There is no single storage setup that is correct everywhere.
Three habits do most of the work regardless of location: store the car clean and completely dry (putting one away damp, or with road salt still on the underside, is the classic own-goal); leave air able to circulate around and under it; and measure rather than guess — a cheap hygrometer settles arguments that assumptions cannot.
What a classic needs that a modern car doesn't
Generic storage advice is written for modern cars. Older vehicles differ in ways that change the prep:

The prep that matters before you walk away

- Wash, dry thoroughly, and wax or seal the paint. Clean the interior — crumbs invite guests.
- Change the oil before storage, so acidic used oil is not sitting against bearings for months.
- Full tank, stabilizer, engine run long enough to circulate it.
- Battery on a maintainer, or removed to a bench maintainer if the car is stored somewhere without power.
- Tires inflated a modest 2–5 psi above normal cold pressure — not the old "+10 psi" advice, which tire makers now caution against.
- Parking brake off, wheels chocked. Windows closed. A breathable cover, not a plastic tarp.
- Exclude rodents mechanically — steel wool in the exhaust tip and airbox intake, traps set outside the car. Skip poison bait, which sends the problem to die somewhere you cannot reach.
While it sits: fifteen minutes a month
Storage is not a set-and-forget operation. Once a month: check tire pressures, confirm the maintainer is charging, look under the car for fresh drips and inside for droppings or mold, and glance at the hygrometer. Whether you should also start it is genuinely contested — a short idle can introduce more moisture into oil and exhaust than it drives off — so either run it long enough to reach full operating temperature, or leave it alone.
Insurance and paperwork
Two administrative items catch owners out. First, storing a car somewhere other than the address on your policy can matter to your insurer, and some carriers offer reduced lay-up rates for a car that is off the road for a defined stretch — worth a phone call either way. The short version
Pick the driest, most stable space you can reach and afford. Measure its humidity instead of assuming. Put the car away clean, dry, fuelled, stabilized, and on a maintainer, with the parking brake off. Visit it once a month. Do those five things and a classic will sit for a season, or several, and come out the way it went in — which is the entire objective.
